AmeriCorps Alumni at Imagine Art

A Legacy of Service

Since September 2019, Imagine Art AmeriCorps service members have empowered artists with disabilities to equally access arts opportunities alongside their non-disabled peers by teaching job readiness skills and providing a full spectrum of support including design, production, exhibition, and micro-business development.

Imagine Art is proud to recognize these former AmeriCorps alumni for their service and accomplishments. They’ve built a strong foundation for future AmeriCorps members to contribute to the legacy of service at Imagine Art.

The fourth cohort of AmeriCorps artists-in-residence began the 2022 session by commemorating 9/11 heroes and fallen of that fateful day. A memorable solemn dance was performed by AmeriCorps member Lacey Richter. The annual October open house, a much anticipated community event, showed off the artistic talents of clients and members in the areas of ceramics, painting and mixed media. For two weekends in November, IA was a stop on the Combined  Austin Studio Tour. Also, for two days at the end of November, IA hosted a Painting Day and Clay Day and the community came together yet again for painting demonstrations and different clay techniques shared by members. The year 2022 culminated with a holiday show at the studio and a featured art exhibition entitled Touching.

The third cohort of AmeriCorps artists-in-residence hit the ground running with an out of town exhibition, Drawing Parallels, in Del Rio, Texas. They welcomed the community to the studio for the inaugural Open House, in advance of participating in their own “faux” version of the Austin Studio Tour, and hosting a Holiday Bazaar. The new year started off with a successful MLK Day of Service, followed by a series of six exhibitions featuring eight artists, including three AmeriCorps artists-in-residence. The Hope Mural was a wonderful collaborative project with Communities Foundation, involving the residents in the production of the mural at Garden Terrace. The cohort finished the service year in style with a Raku Pottery Demo and Ceramic Exhibit and Sale and a fun filled parade that showcased the unique talents of both Imagine Art artists and AmeriCorps artists-in-residence.

The second cohort of AmeriCorps artists-in-residence started their orientation via Zoom and continued teaching Imagine Art artists virtually throughout the service year. The artists-in-residence hosted virtual sales, starting with the Holiday Art sale in December 2020, 8th Annual Souper Bowl, and the Spring 2021 Paper Fling. They ended the service year on a strong note, producing a spring exhibition at Cherrywood Coffeehouse and the Touchstones and New Beginnings Ceramic Exhibition and Community Art Project.
